Gamma Knife Perfexion has made it possible to perform brain surgery quickly without any incisions and complications for lesions that had been difficult to remove completely by using high-energy gamma radiation under partial anesthesia.
A more detailed plan of surgery can be created using the computer program, with the capability to alter the shape of the lesion instead of using the round shape in the conventional method. This allows a more accurate irradiation of the lesion, and it also serves to safely protect the important tissues in the surrounding area.
Various scans including MRI, CT, angio, PET and MEG scans can be used in combination when planning a Gamma Knife Perfexion procedure. Using diverse images can help accurately locate the lesion as well as the surrounding tissues, nerves, etc. to better protect the normal tissues.
Unlike the convention gamma knife systems that move the patient’s neck, Gamma Knife Perfexion operates by moving the bed to the designated location to reduce discomfort in the neck and shoulders. Also, the helmet is larger than ever before, and this will also make the experience more comfortable for the patient.
There is no need to manually change the helmet because all the helmets can be automatically changed according to the established treatment plan. This has reduced the treatment time by around 30 to 60 minutes compared to the conventional gamma knife model.
